On Friday, April 1st, an event called “Art at the Albany Academies” was held on the West Campus for the second time this school year. Paintings, drawings, collages, and photographs by girls and boys of all grades were (and still are) on display throughout the hallways, and received a warm reception from visitors. In fact, the art show was open to the public and was included in Albany’s “1st Friday” — a event on the first Friday of every month meant to highlight the arts scene in Albany. Meanwhile, a reception for the High School Regional Juried Exhibition was held at Sage College. The gallery, open until April 14th, showcases selected pieces from high school students in the capital region. Artwork by several Academy students was chosen to be in the show, including a pin-hole photograph taken by Kaitlin Pericak.
Last month, local artist Robert Gullie visited the photography classes at the Academies and taught the students how to hand-tint photographs, a technique he often uses in his own art. Some of the students’ own tinted photographs were displayed in the Albany Academies show, along with several of Gullie’s own collages.
The event was well attended by students, faculty, parents, and other members of the community. Mr. Zabinski, the photography teacher at the Academies, commented that “Shows such as ‘Art at The Albany Academies: Robert Gullie and students,’ is another example of the Albany Academies warm embrace of student creative expression.” Because the show received such a positive response, it would not be surprising if such events become tradition at our school.
