Four Wrestlers Place in Sectionals

Four Wrestlers Place in Sectionals

The 2010-2011 wrestling season ended last Saturday at the Sectional Tournament in Glens Falls. Six Academy wrestlers had qualified for the tournament by placing in the top four at the previous weekend’s Section D tournament: Nick DiCaprio placed 1st, Cameron Milliken placed 2nd, Stuart Curtis and Sam Delarge placed 3rd, and Erik Rayno and Matt Benton placed 4th. Garrett Esper also placed 6th, but did not move on to the next round

The first day of the two-day Sectional tournament went well, with only two wrestlers losing twice, and therefore being eliminated. The following day was less successful than expected, with all the remaining wrestlers facing and losing to tough opponents. Nevertheless, four Academy students placed in the tournament: senior captains Stuart Curtis and Nick DiCaprio, as well as freshman Cameron Milliken all received 5th place, and freshman Sam Delarge placed 4th. In order to advance to states, wrestlers must win first place in their weight class.

Coach Buran described this season as a “transition year;” the team has a lot of young wrestlers with a great deal of potential, but it may be another year or two before their nascent abilities come to fruition
