Antigone is a Greek tragedy written by Sophocles in the fifth century B.C.E. It tells the story of Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, and her struggle between her civil duty and her loyalty to family. When Antigone’s brother, Polyneices, is slain, Creon proclaims that his body must remain unburied because Polyneices died in rebellion against the state. Antigone, intent on honoring her brother, protests the proclamation and buries Polyneices. As the play unfolds, we are introduced to characters such as the Sentry, (Creon’s comical servant), Haemon (Antigone’s fiancée and Creon’s son), Ismene (Antigone’s sister), Teiresias (the old prophet), and Eurydice (Creon’s wife). The play, which will run from November 5th – 6th, is a mix of comedy, tragedy, moral values, and of course, loss. It is compelling and recommended for everyone ages 12 and up.
