Evening of the Arts a “Colorful” Event

This year’s annual Evening of the Arts actually consisted of two evenings, and, of course, countless displays of artistic expression in all forms.

The events began Wednesday evening with an AA art show and performances by the Upper School Chorus and Band. The vocal portion of the show featured a myriad of songs, including a version of Don’t Stop Believing made popular by the TV show Glee. The Band’s subsequent performance was energetic and lively, and incorporated several Elvis songs into the play list. In a unique combination of visual and audio media, a slideshow entitled Dinosaurs accompanied one of the Band’s numbers. As each image of a different prehistoric beast appeared on a large screen set up in the Chapel, the instrumentals changed to reflect and personify that specific dinosaur. Several members of both the Band and the Chorus also had solo performances, and often supplemented each other’s talents.

Two days later, the focus shifted to the girls’ artwork, as a montage of modern dance was presented to a crowded auditorium. Celebrating Gershwin was the theme of the three middle school dances that began the program. The 5th graders, 6th graders, and the 8th Grade Dance Ensemble danced to Rialto Rag, I’ve Got Rhythm, and An American in Paris, respectively.

The Upper School Dance Workshop took the stage next, sporting black, burgundy, yellow, aqua, pink, white, red, and blue outfits throughout the evening; the theme, naturally, was Colors. One coveted tradition of Evening of the Arts is the option for senior members to choreograph and present their own individual dances. Seniors Kristina Militar, dressed in black, and Roma Luthra, dressed in pink, both dazzled the audience with their seamless numbers. Senior Michaila Stevens and junior Zoey Patack, both in white, also performed a graceful duet. The final number, Satisfaction, was very popular with the audience, who clapped and cheered as all 21 performers, dressed in blue, danced their way around the auditorium and back onto the stage for a final bow.

In addition to all the music, dancing, and singing, students’ visual art was on display throughout both campuses. Paintings, portraits, and collages covered the walls and ceramic pieces were displayed on tables, giving everyone a chance to appreciate the artistic creativity and dedication of all upper school students.

These two incredible evenings were organized by the devoted and enthusiastic members of the Art Department: Mr. Greg Cummings (Department Chair), Ms. Jane Chasin, Ms. Martha Houghton, Ms. Diana Westbrook, Ms. Cathy Teitelbaum, and Ms. Ann Morris.
