Students Explore Modern Dance During Kermani Arts Day

Last week, students at the Albany Academies had the unique opportunity to see the Genesis Dance Company perform live. The six dancers made the long trip from New York City that morning specifically to visit our school. The performance was choreographed by the group, and included a number called Genesis. The company’s website notes that “This ballet explores…different relationships, the hugs shared, and the joy one has in these relationships – with parents, siblings, other relatives and friends.”

Although the afternoon performance was the ostensible highlight of the day, many students had the chance to experience the intimate world of modern dance through a workshop led by members of the Genesis Dance Company. The Upper School Dance Workshop, and later the 7th and 8th grade girls, worked with DW Horton, girls in grades 3 – 6, and the 3rd and 4th grade boys participated in a jazz workshop, and the girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams spent time in yet another workshop presented by the company.

The performance and workshop were part of the Kermani Arts Day, an annual event sponsored by Kermani Arts Fund.
