Second Annual Taste of the World Festival

The highly popular International Taste of the World Festival was held at the Albany Academies on March 27th. The widely attended event featured an eclectic variety of food from 26 countries/cultural regions on five continents (Australia and Antarctica were not represented).

Undoubtedly, the food was the most publicized attraction, and for good reason. The most delectable dishes from both exotic and well-known countries, including Bulgaria, Guyana, France, India, Japan, and Nicaragua, were available throughout the afternoon. However, many of the tables also included ethnic items, decorations, and information. The ever-popular Henna designs, for instance, were happily drawn by the Dawoodani family at the Indian table, and crafts were available in the lobby.

Of course, not to be overwhelmed by the culinary aspect of the event, the artistic side of many cultures was also enjoyed. Irish, Greek, Israeli, Indian and Salsa dances were performed and taught, and ethnic music reverberated throughout the gym. The Upper School Dance Workshop and Mixed Chorus also gave featured performances.

Celebrating such cultural and ethnic diversity is obviously important not only in our society, but also in our school’s community. Events such as these are a necessary reminder that, even in our relatively small private school, there are many diverse students and families who are eager to share their heritage.

Although the festival was organized by The Albany Academies, the individual tables were put-together and managed by families, school clubs, and students with a common cultural interest. Without their cooperation and admirable cooking skills, this event could not have been possible.

Even though the festival was scheduled to run until 6pm, many of the tables ran out of food much earlier. Perhaps the overwhelming popularity of this year’s festival is a harbinger for even bigger, and more delicious, events.
