Wellness Day Provides a Much Needed Break From Routine

The beginning of February — a gloomy time in Albany when everyone suddenly realizes just how long winter really is — is the perfect time for an afternoon of repose.

The annual ‘Wellness Day’ was held on Wednesday, February 3rd, and, while the main focus was on learning how to improve one’s mental, emotional, and physical health, no one complained about wearing sweatpants or skipping classes. The assembly at the beginning of the program featured Nancy Bruno, the photographer whose work is displayed on both campuses. Bruno talked about her project, her goals, and her idea that people are defined by and are beautiful because of the decisions they make. Benita Zahn then followed by talking about the importance of making good choices. Zahn also spoke about the power of laughter, and, fittingly, her own amusing anecdote elicited an epidemic of laughter from the audience.

In the afternoon, workshops at AAG included “Flex and Stretch”, “Protect Yourself and Respect Yourself,” “Quick Tips for Self Defense,” and “About Sleep, Headaches, and Stress.” Meanwhile, the boys rotated through “Relationships 101,” “Training for Athletics,” “Anger in Adolescence,” and “Hip-Hop for Health,” which also seemed to be the most popular.

Although everyone was thankful for the break from regular classes, some students grumbled that they would rather be at home sleeping than at school being told that they need more sleep.

Nevertheless, the SOS club should be commended for their efforts, and for organizing a well-run and successful day.
