Academy Cager Joins Select Club

Captain and senior center J’Vanay Santos recently scored her 1000th point in a win over rival Emma Willard. The feat made her just the 3rd woman in Academy history to have reached this impressive milestone. Despite being hobbled by a sprained ankle, the 6’1” Santos accomplished this feat in typical fashion, by scoring on a “put-back” after outhustling all others to corral a missed shot. The game was momentarily stopped as teammates rushed to congratulate their captain. Never entirely comfortable as the center of attention, J’Vanay did acknowledge the significance of her achievement, calling it “the biggest athletic accomplishment of my high school career.”

The current campaign marks J’Vanay’s 4th season as a Varsity team member, and she is determined to maintain her team’s focus as they head into sectional play. Fellow captain, Jemila Hoyte-King, had nothing but praise for her teammate, stating that she “felt honored to know her and be a part of her and the team’s success.” When asked about her college plans, J’Vanay said she is currently considering offers from Division I, II, and III schools. She acknowledges that she will likely play point guard in college and have to further develop her ball handling skills as well as ramp up her aggressiveness.

Her inevitable departure will leave a large void to fill. The Academy community is advised to not miss out on a chance to witness the end of J’Vanay Santos’s storied high school career.
