The Academy Football team (4-0) took apart one of the worst defenses in Section II last
week in their first game without junior quarterback Hunter McCarthy who will miss the rest of the season with multiple knee injuries.
As expected, the Cadets easily withstood McCarthy’s injury last Saturday when the team went to Cairo to play Cairo-Durham (0-4). The game wasn’t expected to be close and it was not, as Academy thrashed Cairo, 47-8.
Senior running back and captain Zay Richardson continued his MVP type season with 240 yards and four touchdowns. Zay also returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown. While much has been said about the Academy offense it was the under the radar Academy defense which really opened eyes on Saturday. The unit held the Cairo offense to just 60 yards of total offense while intercepting three passes and recovering a fumble, which led to two defensive touchdowns.
This Saturday, October 2nd, the Cadets take on Bishop Maginn (2-2) during Homecoming Weekend. The team hopes to use the same strategy they did against Cairo: run the ball with Richardson and pass as little as possible. Only two passes were thrown the last game, both by Ben Brown, who is filling in for McCarthy at quarterback. Although Bishop Maginn has pedestrian numbers compared to Academy, the team is not taking them lightly.
Senior linebacker and fullback Dimitrius Thomas said, “It’s gonna be a tough game; it’s gonna be like the Clash of the Titans, but we will come out with the win.” All indications point to an Academy win, especially the offense which has scored over twenty-five points in every game, many of them coming from Richardson who has scored 124 of the team’s 204 points. If the defense plays as well this Saturday as it did last Saturday, Coach Fruscio could put Mr. Buran in at quarterback and still win.
