Academy Golf Extends Streak as the Cadets Squeak by Voorheesville

Pure jubilation was the scene at Colonie Country Club as Junior Justin Brock was labeled a hero by senior captain Matt Devito following Friday’s match against a hungry Voorheesville team. Brock shot a one-over-par 37 in the final grouping to complete the Cadets’ comeback victory at Colonie Country Club on Friday. This extended the Cadets’ eight-year streak of undefeated Colonial Council wins in dual matches.

The Cadets, who expected this match to be the toughest of the year, came out on top with a two stroke win. “This was a big statement,” said Albany Academy coach Jak Bestle. “Every shot counts,” said Dr. Devito, Matt’s father and avid Academy fan. Joining Justin in the scoring were senior captain Matt Devito with a 37, sophomore Thomas Cassidy with a 39, and Junior Austin Teal with a 42.

Going into the final pairing Academy trailed by 3 strokes, but the Blackbirds’ linksters could not handle the pressure and fell by 5 strokes to Brock, which proved decisive. Voorheesville will face the Cadets again at Albany Country Club later this year and the Blackbirds will be looking to avenge their loss.

The Cadets have three matches this week. Tuesday at home against Fonda, Thursday at home against Mechanicville, and Friday in Cobleskill against the Bulldogs, all very winnable matches as the Cadets look to keep their incredible streak alive.
