Wrestling Team’s 7-1 Record is the Best in Years

The final two dual matches of the Academy wrestling season took place this past week. On Tuesday, their match against Cobleskill ended with a 51-32 victory for Academy. At that point, the team was undefeated, with a record of 7-0. Two days later, they wrestled against the only other undefeated team in the league, Watervliet; this crucial match would decide the Colonial Council Champions.

Although the night did not end as Academy had hoped, their record of 7-1 — the best in many years — is certainly a testament to the incredible heart and perseverance the team has demonstrated this season.

The annual “Big 10” tournament at Albany High was held this past Saturday. Although the competition was tough, Kyle DiCaprio placed 2nd in the 135-lb weight class, and Stuart Curtis placed 4th in the 171-lb weight class.

Even though there are no more official matches, the season isn’t over yet. Sectionals take place on February 6th, and the top four wrestlers in each weight class move on to another sectional tournament the following weekend. George Featherstonhaugh placed fourth in the first tournament last year, and this year, the team hopes to have six or seven wrestlers place in the top four.
