NFL Week 13 Predictions

Brevin Fleischer and Ethan Katz

Last Week: Ethan Katz: 11-3  Brevin Fleischer: 9-5

Overall: Ethan Katz: 62-43 Brevin Fleischer: 63-42

Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions

Scouting Report: A great, Thanksgiving edition of football as two divisional rivals battle it out in Detroit. Last week was a tough loss for this Lions team. That’s two weeks in a row now that they have scored fewer than ten points, both of which were losses. Look, the Lions defense is very, very good, but they can’t win games if the offense can’t score. The good news for these guys is that they are going up against one of the weaker defenses in the league, as the Bears are 31st in points allowed per game. Thanksgiving day, at home, with a lot on the line, I say that Matthew Stafford and company put up some points and get the victory.

Pick: Detroit-27 Chicago-21 EK

Scouting Report: What is wrong with the Detroit offense? This squad was one of the top offensive units in the league last year, led by Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford., and they haven’t lost any pieces from last year. In fact, they gained Golden Tate, who has emerged as a bit of a star. The one noticeable thing that has plagued the Lions this year is the injury bug. Reggie Bush and the aforementioned Johnson have rarely been healthy at the same time, so if they can get back on the field at 100 percent, the Lions could get back to form. Between Stafford, Johnson, Suh, Tate, Marshall, Forte, and Jeffrey, there is a lot of star power on both teams. Expect a show on Turkey day.

Pick: Detroit-31 Chicago-28 BF

Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys

Scouting Report: Another Thanksgiving edition of football sees two 8-3 teams fighting for a division lead. The Cowboys were able to overcome what some people called the greatest catch of all time last week by Odell Beckham, Jr., and defeat the Giants. These two teams have very efficient offenses and middle-of-the-pack defenses. You can be sure to see a close game throughout, with both of these teams not giving an edge to the other team. When it comes down to it, Dallas has the edge in the passing and running game, and their defense has been slightly better. This could go either way, but many things point in favor of Dallas and so they should win this highly anticipated matchup.

Pick: Dallas-30 Philadelphia-21 EK

Scouting Report: This should be  close one folks. Let’s look at the matchups.

Romo vs. Sanchez-Advantage Romo

Murray vs. McCoy-Even

Bryant vs. Maclin-Advantage Bryant

Sproles vs. Entire Cowboys Special Teams-Advantage Sproles

Garret vs. Kelly-Advantage Kelly

This should be a great, great game.

Pick: Philadelphia-24 Dallas-21  BF

Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers

Scouting Report: The Seahawks proved last week that they can play at the championship level they played at last year with a 19-3 victory over what were the 9-1 Cardinals. Meanwhile, San Francisco has won its last three, all of which were low-scoring, tight victories. These two teams have very similar styles of play. Average offense and great defense leading to relatively low-scoring games. Despite their similarities, when it comes down to it, this is a case of everything the 49ers do, the Seahawks can do better. They’re the more talented team, and will prove that they can play better than they’ve shown at most points this season.

Pick: Seattle-24 San Francisco-17 EK

Scouting Report: Throw away the stats and the records when these two play. This should be an absolute classic. Led by Colin Kaepernick and Anquan Boldin, the 49ers have won three in a row, but will they be able to exploit a Seattle secondary that now has the hard-hitting Kam Chancellor back to team up with Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas? Although I do not consider Russell Wilson a great quarterback by any means, he sure is clutch, and so is the Seattle defense.

Pick: Seattle-17 San Francisco-14 BF

Washington Redskins at Indianapolis Colts

Scouting Report: We see two teams here at opposite ends of the league. The Andrew Luck-led Colts bounced back from a loss to New England and blew out the Jaguars by 20. Granted they were the Jaguars, but these guys can still play some great football and have a favorable matchup against the Redskins. No one ever truly knows what to expect when the Redskins play. One week they beat the Giants and the next the lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by twenty. One thing is for sure. RG3 is still struggling as a quarterback. He’s not playing well at all, and the quarterback choice is always in question in D.C. Until they can get this figured out, they’re not going to beat  high caliber teams any time soon, and this week is no exception. Expect the Colts to win in dominant fashion.

Pick: Indianapolis-33 Washington-17 EK

Scouting Report: It’s true that Andrew Luck has died off from his blistering pace to start the year, but I doubt it will matter in this game. Frankly, Washington stinks. They are terrible. It doesn’t matter who’s playing quarterback. Whether it’s RGIII, or Colt McCoy, or Kirk Cousins, they are not a good team, and the Colts are a good team, so I don’t expect them to lose at home.

Pick: Indianapolis-43 Washington-13 BF

Tennessee Titans at Houston Texans

Scouting Report: There’s a reason the Titans have struggled so much this year, and it’s simple: they don’t have the talent to win football games. No one on their team is a high quality game changer that can give them a victory. These guys try hard, want to win games, but the 2015 NFL Draft is a perfect time to get that much needed star, and the Titans realize that. Houston beat these guys by two touchdowns in Tennessee in Week 8, and there’s no reason that the Texans can’t beat them again.

Pick: Houston-24 Tennessee-21 EK

Scouting Report: The Tennessee Titans may have the most underrated receiving corps in the league. Between Justin Hunter, Kendall Wright, and Delanie Walker, they have some guys that can make plays. If young Zach Mettenberger can deliver them the ball, the Titans have a real shot at winning this football game. I’ll let you in on a secret: HOUSTON IS NOT THAT GOOD. Sure, they have J.J. Watt on defense, but with Ryan Mallett at quarterback, they are basically wasting the talent of the DeAndre Hopkins and Andre Johnson, and that’s a huge relief for the Titans to not have to worry about those guys.

Pick: Tennessee-24 Houston-13 BF

New York Giants at Jacksonville Jaguars

Scouting Report: The Giants are on a five-game losing streak, and the Jaguars are on a four-game losing streak after their sole win on the season against Cleveland in Week 7. Most people didn’t expect much from these guys this season, and they’re showing us why. These are two of the lowest scoring teams in the league, but these are also two of the worst defenses in the league. This could be a high-scoring game or a very low-scoring one, no one really knows. What we do know is that both of these teams suck, but one has to come out on top, and that’s going to be the New York Giants and breakout star wide receiver Odell Beckham ,Jr.

Pick: New York-27 Jacksonville-17 EK

Scouting Report: A star was born last Sunday night, and that star’s name is Odell Beckham, Jr., the rookie receiver out of LSU. If you haven’t seen his catch falling back into the endzone, snagging the ball with three fingers, then you’ve been living under a rock.  What gets lost in that game is how well the Giants really played against a team some consider to be one of the best in football. I expect the Giants to finally put it all together, build off of last week, and get a win in Tom Coughlin’s return to Jacksonville.

Pick: New York-24 Jacksonville-21 BF

Cincinnati Bengals at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Scouting Report: It’s gotta be tough to be a Buccaneers fan these days. Nothing is really going for these guys other than 2 wins and the fantastic play of rookie wide receiver Mike Evans. The season is a lost cause for the Buccaneers now, and they really only have the 2015 draft to look forward to. Meanwhile, Cincinnati has won two in a row and sits atop a tightly contested divisional battle. They’ve played relatively well against the bottom tier teams of the league, and with a lot on the line for the Bengals, this game will be no exception. Bengals win this one.

Pick: Cincinnati-20 Tampa Bay-17 EK

Scouting Report: I don’t care that this game is being played in Tampa Bay. It won’t matter. The Bengals are on a mission. They can’t afford a loss in that tightly contested AFC North, so they will not lose this game, no matter what. They simply cannot afford to lose this game. It’s truly that simple. Their lead in the division is slim at best, and to lose here, to Tampa Bay of all teams, would all but crush their playoff chances. When your division has zero teams under .500, you can’t lose. There is no margin for error.

Pick: Cincinnati-27 Tampa Bay-17 BF

Cleveland Browns at Buffalo Bills

Scouting Report: Things have looked better for both of these teams compared to where they were last year. The Browns more than held their own without suspended star wide receiver Josh Gordon, and with him back in the lineup, they’ve added a ton of offensive firepower. Buffalo have done pretty well too and are coming off a dominating performance against the Jets, allowing just three points and putting up 38. Their defense has been phenomenal, and quarterback Kyle Orton hasn’t been too shabby himself. This one is going to be played in Buffalo amidst one of the worst storms in history, and the city of Buffalo and the team will really want this one and should be determined and focused. Because of this, the Bills will beat the Browns in what is a very evenly matched game.

Pick: Buffalo-27 Cleveland-21 EK

Scouting Report: Honestly, I don’t trust myself to pick this game. I’m the guy that picked the Jets to beat the Bills. What was I thinking? I’ve never trusted either of these teams this year and have picked against them multiple times, only to be proven wrong. I don’t know exactly which team is better overall. They are very similar, but I’ll tell you what: this Buffalo defensive line is legit, and I am in no position to pick against them.

Pick: Buffalo-24 Cleveland-20 BF

Oakland Raiders at St. Louis Rams

Scouting Report: Man, oh man — St. Louis has been the most confusing team this year. They beat teams like San Francisco, Denver, and Seattle, and yet are 4-7 overall. These guys don’t have much offensive firepower, and their defense isn’t anything special either, yet they are able to either compete with or beat good teams. Going against them are the 1-10 Raiders, who got their first win of the season against the Chiefs. For being such a poor team, the Raiders have been able to hang with some teams for four quarters, but just haven’t been able to pick up the victories. This will be a close one for sure, and definitely won’t be a spectacular display of skill, but in the end the Rams should be able to pick up the victory.

Pick: St. Louis-21 Oakland-17 EK

Scouting Report: St. Louis SHOULD win this game. They really SHOULD. However, they are something of an enigma this year. They only have four wins, but they’ve beaten the likes of San Francisco, Denver, and Seattle. Their defense looked especially good against Denver a few weeks ago, and if they can play half as well against Oakland, they’ll bring home the W.

Pick: St. Louis-21 Oakland-10 BF

New Orleans Saints at Pittsburgh Steelers

Scouting Report: You know a division is bad when a 4-7 team is in first place. Well, that’s what the NFC South is looking like right now, with Atlanta and New Orleans fighting for first place. The Saints haven’t had the best luck, losing two overtime games and two other games by a combined total of three points. As in recent years, the problem for the Saints has come on the defensive end. They have weapons on offense: Brees, Graham, rookie Brandin Cooks, among others. They have no problem scoring the ball, but they do have problems preventing their opponents from scoring the ball. Pittsburgh has been on and off this year. They’ve lost to Tampa Bay and the Jets, but have beaten the Colts and the Ravens. The Steelers have a very balanced team, however, with big play offensive players in Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, and Le’veon Bell, and their middle of the pack defense has allowed them to win games. This Steelers balance, along with coming off a bye week, will prove to be too much for a struggling Saints team.

Pick: Pittsburgh-31 New Orleans-28 EK

Scouting Report: What is wrong with Saints? Since when can’t they even win at home? What’s up with that? They are famous for being dominant at home and shaky at best on the road. Well, now since they are shaky at best at home, what will that make them on the road in Pittsburgh? Who on their team can possibly stop Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown? I just don’t see any chance of their defense stopping those guys.

Pick: Pittsburgh-28 New Orleans-17 BF

San Diego Chargers at Baltimore Ravens

Scouting Report: Philip Rivers has cooled down considerably since his hot start to the season. This week facing a great run defense and relatively weak secondary, Philip Rivers will be throwing the ball a lot and his play will determine the outcome of this game. When it comes down to it, Philip Rivers just doesn’t have the explosiveness to carry this team over a very talented Ravens team who will want to win this as they head into an easier schedule after this one. Ravens win this and improve to 5-1 at home this season.

Pick: Baltimore-24 San Diego-20 EK

Scouting Report: I can’t believe that I’m doing  this, but I’m picking San Diego to win on the road, against the Ravens. Ryan Matthews is back, and the Chargers put up 410 yards of offense last week against a pesky Rams team. The Chargers are about to go down a tough stretch of matchups beginning this week, so they really need this win.

Pick: San Diego-17 Baltimore-13 BF

Carolina Panthers at Minnesota Vikings

Scouting Report: Since starting the season 2-0, the Panthers are 1-7-1. No one expected the Panthers to be this bad after a 12-4 campaign last season. Offense, defense, you name it, the Panthers are struggling. The good news for them is that they still have an opportunity to make the playoffs, playing in the weakest division in the league.  It’s time for these guys to get their team together and turn their season around. This is the game where it starts. Minnesota understands that their season is over, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t come out strong. Carolina, however, will come out stronger and make sure they win, overpowering a weak Minnesota team.

Pick: Carolina-30 Minnesota-13 EK

Scouting Report: The Vikings, even without Adrian Peterson, are a pretty good football team, and they proved that last week against the Packers, where they lost by a field goal. I’ll tell you what: The Cam Newton-led Panthers would have lost by a whole lot more than that. Even with all of their talent, the Panthers simply aren’t a good team. There is something amiss about Cam Newton, and until whatever it is is fixed, Carolina will not win games.

Pick: Minnesota-24 Carolina-17 BF

Arizona Cardinals at Atlanta Falcons

Scouting Report: It’s very evident that this is not the same Cardinals team without Carson Palmer. No offense to Drew Stanton, but the Cardinals won’t be going far if this offense can’t score more than 10 points. Arizona has a pretty darn good defense, but it’s not good enough to lead them to victories over the better NFL offenses if the Cardinals offense can’t put up points. Stanton will more than likely put up better stats than in the last couple of weeks going up against one of the worst defenses in the league, but for some reason, I sense an upset coming out of Atlanta here. As of right now, the Falcons would be heading to the playoffs with a 4-7 record. That’s pretty nuts, but being in an awful division this year could help them a lot. The Falcons defense will step up this week and allow the offense to pull off the upset and extend their division lead.

Pick: Atlanta-27 Arizona-20 EK

Scouting Report: If you’re an offense looking to bounce back after a tough week, go to Atlanta and play the horrifyingly bad Falcons defense led by….nobody. Drew Stanton needs to bounce back after a tough game last week, and this is certainly the place to start.

Pick: Arizona-17 Atlanta-13 BF

New England Patriots at Green Bay Packers

Scouting Report: This is the game of the week. No doubt about it. Both of these teams have been really, really, really good this season. The duo of Aaron Rodgers and Jordy Nelson has torn apart defenses. Rodgers play has been incredible, throwing for 30 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Tom Brady and his offense have also been playing amazing football lately. They’ve blown out almost all of their opponents during their seven-game win streak, the sole exception being a 2-point victory over the Jets in week 7. This game is not just a matchup between Rodgers and Brady; many other factors are going to be involved in the outcome of this game. The big news at the end of this one will be that the Packers offense outplayed the Pats offense, leading them to a victory and extending their undefeated home record this season.

Pick: Green Bay-38 New England-28 EK

Scouting report: This game is an absolute toss-up. The Packers are borderline unbeatable at home, while the Patriots have yet to lose a big game. Both quarterbacks are playing at an MVP level this year, and both defenses have been very solid. Expect the Lambeau crowd to carry the day, and the Packers to win this game.

Pick: Green Bay-28 New England-24 BF

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs

Scouting Report: The last time these guys played, Denver won at home. Minus a few blemishes, since that game in week 2, both of these teams have played very well. Both of these teams’ strengths on defense matchup with both teams’ strengths on offense. Kansas City’s top pass defense will be going up against Peyton Manning, while the Broncos dominant rush defense will be facing Jamaal Charles. The different styles of play for these guys will be interesting to watch. Simply put, Peyton Manning is going to be harder to stop than Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs offense. For that, I’m taking the Broncos in this feature of Sunday Night Football.

Pick: Denver-28 Kansas City-24 EK

Scouting Report: The Kansas City players will be playing this game with heavy hearts, after hearing that their star safety could be out of football forever. That being said, Kansas City will come out to this game, at home, and outwork their opponent; they will play for their Eric Berry, and they will win. It will be an emotional game for the Chiefs, and I expect them to use that emotion in their favor.

Kansas City-24 Denver-23 BF

Miami Dolphins at New York Jets

Scouting Report: Geno Smith will be getting the start. Geno Smith has struggled, a lot. He hasn’t played much lately, but he has to do something for the Jets to have a chance of winning games. Unfortunately for Geno and company, the Dolphins have one of the better defenses in the league. Every game is a must win for the Dolphins from here on out, and they’ll recover from a heart-breaking loss in Denver last week to win this one.

Pick: Miami-24 New York-10 EK

Scouting Report: Cameron Wake will be the best player on the field Monday night when these teams square off. Expect him to hit Geno Smith often. Expect those hits to lead to turnovers. Expect those turnovers to lead to points. Expect those points to lead to a Miami win.

Pick: Miami-21 New York-7 BF
