October Baseball

The World Series is what every kid dreams of playing when he is ten years old, and October is what every big league organization wants to reach.  The Yankees getting knocked out by the Detroit Tigers and The St. Louis Cardinals being eliminated by the San Francisco Giants, there are two teams left, the Giants and the Tigers, to battle it out in the World Series.

Wednesday night San Francisco was the place to be if you are a baseball fan.  The Tigers had their ace Justin Verlander on the mound and the Giants went with the veteran Barry Zito. Verlander, who won the MVP and the Cy Young last year, lights up the radar gun with electric stuff, hitting 100 mph.  Barry Zito, who last won a Cy Young award in 2002, is lucky to reach the mid-eighties with his fastball, but his baseball instinct and experience enables him to be so successful. The pitching staffs have been a significant reason why these teams have reached the World Series, as one through five in the rotation they are stacked.

The Giants did the talking with the bats on Wednesday night.  Pablo Sandoval, also known as the Kung Fu Panda, took the spotlight, lighting up Verlander.  In the first inning he slammed a 421 foot shot to deep center to get the Giants to an early 1-0 lead. In the third, Marco Scutaro knocked in another run making It 2-0.  Red hot Sandoval stepped up to the plate in the third and blasted a two run homer stretching their lead to 4-0. In the fourth inning Barry Zito, the pitcher, slapped a base hit helping his own cause, making it 5-0. In the fifth, the Giants, with a 6-0 lead, had Kung Fu Panda up again.  Sandoval, the hottest hitter in baseball, yet again sent a towering shot to center.  This 435-foot bomb brought his homerun total to three on the night and six for the postseason.

Finally the Tigers’ bats woke up in the sixth inning. Miguel Cabrera singled in center fielder, Austin Jackson.  In the seventh and eighth Buster Posey and Scutaro knocked in another couple of runs, making it 8-1.  With the Tigers last chance in the ninth they could only scavenge two runs on a home run by Peralta.  The San Francisco Giants got the eight to three victory in the first game of the 2012 World Series.  Pablo Sandoval going 4-4 with four runs batting in was the story of the night.  Justin Verlander had a shaky performance, and Zito surprisingly outpitched him.

The big sluggers for the Tigers were nowhere to be found. Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Delmon Young didn’t produce when the pressure was at its highest. Now the Tigers, down a game to the Giants, will have to get hot and get the bats going to have a chance in the World Series. Game two’s starters are Doug Fister for the Tigers and Madison Bumgarner for the Giants.  The 2012 Major League Baseball World Series is on its way.
