AAG Soccer Season Outlook

The AAG Varsity Soccer team has had its ups and downs. In 2007, the team went undefeated in the CHVL, becoming the first ever AAG Soccer team to do so. The following year, the team was forced to move into the more competitive Colonial Council, and so their record for the 2008 season was roughly 500. This past year, the team had barely enough players to fill the field, ended the season with only three wins, and did not even go to sectionals. With these facts in mind, it is hard to really speculate as to how AAG Soccer’s 2010 season will go, although it is easy to say how the season should go.

This year, the starting lineup has a mixture of returning and new players. Emily Lloyd (’11) and Catherine Dudek (’12) head the defensive line, while three new additions, Polly Grey (’11) — the team’s starting keeper — Martha Crowley (’13) and Ashley T. (’14) complete the defense. The midfield is entirely made up of returning players, including outside midfielders Lizzy Robinson (’11) and Emma Malicki (’13), and central midfielder Emily Downie (’12). Bridget Malicki (’11) leads the forwards, with Brianna Hart (’15) and Talia Rockmore (’14), both new players, at the flanks. This lineup has made for several successful scrimmages, and has allowed AAG to clench their first win this past Friday in a 2-1 overtime game against Lansingburgh. AAG had never beaten Lansingburgh before, so the outcome of this game shows promise for a bright future in Girls’ Varsity Soccer.

Though past years have been rough, the team is confident that the 2010 season will be a turn-around year for AAG Soccer. Equipped with new and old players, all with the skill to defeat any team, it should be a successful season for the Bears. However, it will take more than skilled players for the team to have a winning season. The squad should be able to defeat teams such as Cobleskill, Voorheesville, Watervliet, Cohoes, and Fonda-Fultonville, and with these victories there is no doubt that their season will be better than the last. Unfortunately, no one can be certain of how the next couple months will play out, so we will just have to watch as the season progresses to see whether or not the Girls Academy Soccer team rises to the occasion.
