After last year’s huge success, the AAG Lacrosse team wondered what the 2010 season would hold. The team is only two games into their season, but the future already looks promising. The girl’s Lacrosse team opened their season with two important games: Shenendahowa and Colonie. Both of these schools play in the Suburban Council; both of these schools are three times the size of AAG. However, the team proved themselves with a win against Shenendahowa on Thursday (14-12), and a win against Colonie on Saturday (8-6). Two games, two opportunities in which the girls proved themselves not only to be a force in their own league, but also a force in Section II lacrosse.
The two games played against Shenendahowa and Colonie played out quite differently. When Academy played Shenendahowa, the girls came out hard and strong, taking a 5 goal lead midway through the first half. However, they waivered slightly on the defensive end, allowing Shenendahowa to answer with two goals, bringing the halftime score to 8-4. The second half was a different story. Shenendahowa took control of the draw during the second half, making it difficult for AAG to score. With twelve minutes left in the game, the score was tied. However, Academy cleaned it up, scored some goals, and held on to come up with the win. The game versus Colonie was the opposite. AAG was behind for most of the game. The first half was a struggle for the Bears. Colonie scored two goals, and Academy answered with one at the beginning of the game. Colonie scored two more, and Academy answered with one again, bringing the score to 4-3. However with 12 seconds left in the first half, Academy gave up a goal, making the score 5-3, Colonie. The second half was when Academy shined, particularly the defense. Academy’s defense, and their goalie, Leddy Sullivan, only allowed one goal the entire second half. This allowed Academy to tie it up, and later to take the lead. Towards the end, Academy used their skill to run the clock, until there was no time left. Academy came up with another well-deserved victory of 8-6.
Quite honestly, the most difficult part of Academy’s season is over. They have played and beaten the two best teams they will go up against during their regular season. Not only did they prove they could play against Suburban Council teams, but that they would not, and do not, give up. If the AAG lacrosse team can keep this up, they will have the opportunity to make it as far, if not farther than, they did last year. With loads of talent, skill, and drive, will the Academy Girl’s Lacrosse team go all the way? We will have to wait and see. One thing is for sure, though: AAG is a lacrosse team to be reckoned with.
