Academy Wrestling Has Another Successful Week

On Thursday, January 14th, the Academy Wrestling team defeated Ravena, and took one more step toward the Colonial Council Championship. Expecting the match to be very close, the team was noticeably nervous — especially since Mory Gueye and Adam Miller were still sidelined with injuries. Although the final score, 42-36, was quite close, it was enough for the wrestlers, who once again went home smiling.

The following Wednesday was the senior-night match against Mechanicville. Kyle DiCaprio, Ryan Benson, Renel Potter, Adam Miller, George Featherstonhaugh, and David Buran, and of course Leddy Sullivan, one of the team managers, were all recognized and thanked for their dedication and contributions to the team. After dozens of flowers, pictures, and words of praise, Academy proceeded to defeat Mechanicville 42-30 in an astonishing 40 minutes (dual-matches usually take around 90 minutes).

The very next day, Academy took on Voorheesville, and won 46-33. However, the week wasn’t over yet; on Friday night the team drove down to the Stony Brook School on Long Island for a tournament the following day. Academy won two of the four dual-matches they competed in during the tournament (as mentioned in a previous article, a defeat in a tournament does not affect a team’s standing in the regular league) — a respectable finish.

This Tuesday, Academy has an away match in Cobleskill; if they win, their next match against Watervliet on Thursday will determine the Colonial Council champion. This Saturday, Academy will participate in the “Big 10” tournament at Albany High. This will be the last opportunity to see the Academy wrestlers, so feel free to stop by (the tournament is held in the gym, and lasts all day).
