NFL Divisional Playoff Picks

NFL+Divisional+Playoff+Picks

The four games this week in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs are all between teams who have already faced each other this season. In the AFC, the teams have seen each other twice, as they are divisional matchups. My editor, who it seems picked names out of a hat to decide on his picks last week, went a mediocre 2-2. I think I can do a lot better, so I asked my pals Dirty Mike and the Boys to pick ‘em.

Baltimore Ravens (13-4) at Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) Saturday 4:30 on CBS

This is probably the toughest game of the weekend to pick, as the teams played so evenly in the regular season and finished with the same record. The Ravens beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh 17-14 all the way back in Week 4, but that was without Big Ben Roethlisberger, who was still serving his suspension. In Week 13 in Baltimore, it appeared the Ravens would win, but Pittsburgh forced a late turnover and won 13-10. But those games mean nothing now. The Ravens thrashed a good Chiefs team in KC and, though the Steelers have home field advantage, it doesn’t matter here. The Steelers had three of their four losses at home and those were to the three teams still alive in the AFC. The Ravens forced five turnovers from a Chiefs team that had turned it over only 15 times all year. Joe Flacco dominated the Chiefs last week and I look for him to have continued success, which will open up running lanes for Ray Rice. Big Ben and company will be able to squeeze out some points, but this will be a hard hitting game on both sides. Dirty Mike sees a low scoring game, let’s say 19-16 Ravens.

Green Bay Packer (11-6) at Atlanta Falcons (13-3) Saturday 8:00 on FOX

These two teams met in Week 12, a contest that the Falcons won 20-17 on a game-winning field goal in the final seconds. Dirty Mike will be honest here; the winner of this game will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, as these are the two best teams in the NFC. This matchup is the equivalent to the NFC championship game. The Falcons have lost a mere four games in the Georgia Dome in the Matt Ryan-Mike Smith era. This season they had the best wideout in the NFC in Roddy White. Michael Turner rushed for over 1,300 yards this season, gaining over 100 against the Packers in Week 4, and will be a big factor on Saturday. On the other hand, Green Bay did get a solid win in Philly on Sunday. Aaron Rodgers tossed three TDs and the defense neutralized the big-play ability of the Eagles. But the Falcons are better than the Eagles at just about every position besides quarterback. Green Bay will be too confident coming into this game. The Packers running back, John Stark, who rushed for over 100 yards on Sunday, will return to mediocrity this Sunday, and Green Bay will return to throwing the ball every down, which will cripple their game plan. Matt Ryan will be solid, but unspectacular, and will look for tight end Tony Gonzalez often. The Packers defense, which did not get much pressure in their first meeting, will struggle to get pressure in this game and I look for Packers head coach Mike McCarthy to make a coaching gaffe that sets his team back. Dirty Mike likes Atlanta to move on to the NFC Championship game, 31-21.

Seattle Seahawks (8-9) at Chicago Bears (11-5) 1:00 on FOX

This game is the black sheep of the weekend and would be only exciting if Seattle can make it to the NFC championship game. These two played back in Week 6 in Chicago, where Seattle emerged with a 23-20 victory. They put constant pressure on Jay Cutler and sacked him six times. Seattle will be riding the emotional high from shocking the defending champion New Orleans Saints, and I think they can pull out a victory over a solid, but inconsistent, Bears team. The main dilemma for the Bears is which Cutler will show up in his first playoff start? Will it be the one who led a team that scored a mere three points in the final week of the season? Or will it be the one who tossed four TDs against a good Jets defense a week earlier? The Seahawks do not have a good passing defense, and Drew Brees still lit them up in last week’s lost. This game will come down to Marshawn Lynch and whether he can repeat or at least do a good imitation of his performance last week. Dirty Mike will go with the hot hand, Seattle 28-21

New York Jets (12-5) at New England Patriots (14-2) 4:30 on CBS

Dirty Mike is a Jets fan, so this pick will be biased. The Jets and Pats split the season series, with the home team winning both games. Dirty Mike was at the first game. The Jets won. Dirty Mike wasn’t at the second game. Boy, was Dirty Mike lucky. Many people do not give the Jets a chance, but losing 45-3 in the biggest game of the year with a chance to go up two games in the division on your biggest rival seems to validate this opinion. It was like Apollo Creed stepping into the ring with Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. Yeah sure, maybe you don’t expect to win, but you don’t expect to get murdered. But let me tell you a tale. This past fantasy football season my team, whose name is too vulgar to be named in a family newspaper, dominated from beginning to end. My biggest opponent from my division, a loose cannon by the name of Jake Miorin, and I split our regular season series. But in our second meeting, I crushed him. It was an embarrassment. I met him in the playoffs as the #1 seed and he as a wild card team, and I’ll admit I was confident. Tragically, my team was ripped apart and upset. Sure, it’s not the U.S. beating the Russians in 1980, but it’s still good stuff. If the Jet proved one thing on Saturday night it was this: you can never count them out. This game could be bigger than any Jets game since Joe Namath jogged off the field 42 years ago in Super Bowl III. Rex Ryan will need to outcoach the Evil Emperor, Bill Belichick. Mark Sanchez will need to be turnover free and clutch as Eli Manning was in Super Bowl XLII. Every Jets DB will need to be his own island. The Boys have tried to convince Dirty Mike that he should go with the logical pick instead of playing favorites. Whoops. Jets 31- Pats 28
